hda1= 1st partition 1st drive C: under DOS/win
hda2=2nd partition 1st drive D: ""
hda3=3rd partition 1st drive E: ""
hdb=whole second drive
hdb1=1st partition 2nd drive F: ""
hdc=whole third drive
hdc1=1st partition third drive G: ""
etc,etc
a bit confusing till you get used to the idea of ALL your drives as one filesystem, at which point it makes perfect sense:)
