A good idea, if you can spend 100$, could be to buy a little "centralino"
(also my english is fractured and I don't know the proper word for centralino,
I hope you understand this Italian word :-) ). A "centralino" for 1 incoming
line to 4 internal extentions costs (more or less) that amount,
is very easy to install, is the real thing (first modem dials, there is a real
call, on the other side ypu have rings and then the picking up)
and, when you are done with your experiments, it is still usefull to call from
a room to the another and much more.

P.S.: I really apreciate your mulinux, apart enjoing it for its elegance,
I'm using it to connect an old 486 on which I run my accountability,
pure old DOS 5.2 with no networking software, to my net for backups
