UniX11 Software InfoPage
Welcome to the WWW information page of UniX11. This document
describes the Unix Cockpit (TM) software and how to get it.
We'll be happy to answer any questions via email to
support@UniX11.com.

The Unix Cockpit (UC) is a new Unix/X-Windows file manager that combines convenience
with power. File browsers, a directory tree, custom menus and
your standard command shell are
smoothly integrated into one highly customizable, multi-window
productivity tool
of a kind long missed on Unix systems. Or, to
quote
one of our beta testers: `I've got UC 0.411 and launched
it. It's great. Just the program I was looking for all the years.'
If you like XTree Gold or the Norton Commander, or if you're fed up with
straight jacket
point-click-curse interfaces, or if you want to extend the power of the
command line, this program is for you.
Hardware Requirements
You need a color X-screen, black & white will be supported within
roughly 2 months. Other than that, you don't need a fast machine to run
UC, because it is very CPU and memory efficient. For example,
tested speed was acceptable even on an old 25MHz R3000 SGI with 16MB
and an ancient Sun-4/110. Of course, a faster X-server won't hurt.
Software Requirements
UC for X-windows is available for several operating systems and
configurations. Everything, including the online help system, is
contained in one single file. No superuser privileges are necessary
for installation - just ftp (binary mode) the version you like from ftp.uu.net,
/vendor/UniX11. The professional version 1.0 of UC is shipping for:
- Silicon Graphics Irix 4.0.5F or higher
- Silicon Graphics Irix 5.2 or higher (contains slightly more functionality
than the 4.0.5F versions due to the more powerful Irix 5.x).
Currently beta-testing are versions for:
- Sun Sparc running SunOS 4.1.3 or higher;
- Sun Sparc running Solaris 2.3 or higher;
- DEC Alphas running OSF1 V3.0 or higher;
- IBM RS/6000 running AIX 3.2.5 or higher;
- HP-UX 9.05 PA-RISC 1.1 or higher;
- Linux kernel release 1.0.8 or higher;
If you don't find your desired machine in this list,
email henrik@UniX11.com and request us to port it.
Important: What to do after ftp transmission
UC comes to you as a gzip
'ped (that is, compressed using the
gzip
compressor program) binary to speed up transmission. After transmission,
you need to decompress the binary using gunzip
.
If you don't have
gunzip
, transmit it as well. We have provided machine-specific
gunzip binaries for you together with the UC binaries.
After ftp'ing and decompression, you will have a file like
uc-irix5-1.0, indicating the machine version and release number. We suggest
you rename it to plain uc
, for brevity.
Remember to chmod +x uc
to make the uc binary executable on your system.
Otherwise, you will get a Permission Denied
error when
trying to execute it.
Pricing and License Policy
After new releases, UC binaries will generally run free for a
few weeks. After that, they will switch from professional mode to
normal mode which is less powerful then the professional one.
To enable professional mode and either continue evaluation, or to
buy the product, please email us your
host ID(s)
so that we
can issue you one or several temporary or permanent licenses.
You don't need a license. If you don't have one, UC will simply run
in normal mode. No problem. You're welcome to use and distribute
the normal-mode program as much as you like.
UC is aggressively
low priced . We want this program to run on every
Unix machine on the planet. It is already being used by
2 major movie companies, 4 big national and industry US labs
and by many Universities and individuals worldwide. References
are available upon request.
As all software, UC and its use are subject to a
software license . If you don't read the license, you're
on your own with the software, and have no warranty whatsoever.
Be warned that license legalese is a thoroughly boring subject,
though :-) !
The UniX11 Cockpit Tutorial
The UniX11 Cockpit Tutorial
is available from ftp.uu.net, formatted in gzip'ped postscript.
You can either preview it with a postscript previewer or print
it on any postscript printer. Note that the tutorial (same
contents, but only text-mode formatting) can also
be started from within UC itself.
